Blind and partially sighted graduates benefit from practice assessment centres courtesy of Blind in Business and SHL

Summary:

Twenty blind or partially sighted students spent two days at the SHL Management Centre last week meeting with potential employers, practicing psychometric tests, and discussing advice on applying for jobs and the support available from Government and employers.

Release Date: 27 Aug 04

Recruitment specialists from P&G, The Civil Service, BDO Stoy Hayward, LDA, Tate Office, the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, UBS, Deloitte, Accenture, TMP, Royal Mail, Barclays, Lloyds TSB, Centrica, Citigroup, KPMG, HSBC, Unilever and CMS Cameron McKenna also attended the event to learn more about the requirements of visually impaired candidates as well as to get an early opportunity to interview some high calibre individuals.

The candidates also spent an afternoon waterskiing - a fantastic confidence-building activity that all enjoyed. Comments from the attendees included:

“I was sceptical at first about going but I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a great deal. In particular, I learnt not to give up hope. I found it eye opening to see other people's determination and the effort they are putting in to find work. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself; meeting some new friends and sharing experiences was really helpful. “ - Anthony Carlton

“I will definitely use the information gained from the mock interview to improve my interview technique. I now have some more ideas of where to look for work and how to go about it.” - Tim Reynolds

Photography of the event is available
Candidates are available to discuss their experience with journalists.

About Blind in Business

Ten years ago, three blind graduates started the charity "Blind in Business" to make it easier for other blind graduates to get good jobs, especially through technology. We encourage blind and partially sighted young people to identify and achieve their ambitions. We help blind and partially sighted graduates into careers. We do these things by listening, talking and making sure they have confidence and the right technology. We do it all free and throughout the United Kingdom. The Training Service: We introduce blind and partially sighted students, their parents and teachers, to the benefits of the latest technology and show them many job and educational opportunities.
The Employment Service: We talk with undergraduates and graduates to help them move into the right jobs. We advise employers on what blind or partially sighted graduates can do.
