The Framework in detail

The framework is a hierarchical structure based on 3 levels:

  1. The top level is comprised of 8 factors (this is also referred to as the ‘Great 8 Model’ or the ‘SHL 8 Model’). These factors represent general categories of behaviours that influence performance across many different jobs.
  2. The second level comprises 20 dimensions (also referred to as the ‘SHL 20 Model’). These dimensions provide a more detailed breakdown of the 8 factors. Dimensions are equivalent in level to the competencies found in existing SHL competency models such as the Inventory of Management Competencies (IMC), Perspectives on Management Competencies (PMC) and the Customer Contact Competency Inventory (CCCI).
  3. The third level is comprised of 112 components.  Components provide a highly detailed breakdown of the 20 dimensions, making it possible to narrowly define the various critical behaviours that impact on performance in a specific job. It is this component level that enables the mapping and comparison between competency models, and the facility to construct virtually any sort of client competency model.
