SHL's Competency Framework

Competencies are defined as desired behaviours that support the attainment of organisational objectives. Competency potential is seen to derive from individual dispositions and attainments, and competency requirements involve both facilitators of and barriers to effective performance in the workplace.Competency based systems have increasingly been recognised as an effective tool in the strategic management of human resources.

What is the SHL Competency Framework?

The Competency Framework is an easy to apply model/mechanism that can describe effectively the key behaviours that drive performance in virtually any job, at any level, in any organisation.

It provides a common language for the organisation - Competencies have come to form an intermediary language between different groups within the workplace. Their popularity probably owes a great deal to the ease with which competencies can be commonly understood and discussed by applicants, jobholders, Human Resources professionals and psychologists. Rather than dealing with potentially complex psychological themes of personality, motivation, aptitude, and so forth, competencies allow a focus on clearly specified behaviour.
