Technical Test Battery

The Technical Test Battery is a series of aptitude tests particularly suitable for the selection and development of individuals in technically or practically oriented jobs. The Technical Test Battery consists of 8 different types of aptitude test, assessing different abilities particularly important in these roles.

The abilities assessed with the Technical Test Battery

The following 8 abilities can be assessed, but you may not need to measure them all. You can select only those that are key to your organisational requirements. These aptitude tests are short, taking between 10 and 20 minutes each.

  • Verbal Comprehension
  • Numerical Computation
  • Numerical Reasoning
  • Visual Estimation
  • Mechanical Comprehension
  • Technical Understanding
  • Fault Diagnosis
  • Spatial Recognition.

Why measure these abilities and what is measured?

  • Verbal Comprehension - measures vocabulary and basic word skills using language appropriate to the requirements of technical occupations.  It is appropriate for use with apprentices in engineering, building and other industries.
  • Numerical Computation - measures basic numeracy and is appropriate for craft apprentices and for more general use.  The emphasis is on understanding numerical relationships and operations as well as performing basic calculations.
  • Numerical Reasoning - measures simple reasoning skills with numbers, focusing on understanding, reasoning and recognising short-cuts to reach solutions.
  • Visual Estimation - measures spatial perception and the ability to make accurate visual comparisons.  It is particularly suitable for craft and operator level jobs involving basic design and assembly work.
  • Mechanical Comprehension - measures the understanding of basic mechanical principles and their applications to a number of devices, including pulleys, gears and levers.  A core skill relevant in many technical jobs.
  • Technical Understanding - measures the ability to understand written passages containing the type of material likely to be found in a typical technical setting, such as machine manuals and operating instructions.
  • Fault Diagnosis - assesses the ability to identify faults in logical systems. No specialised knowledge is required.
  • Spatial Recognition - measures the ability to recognise shapes in two dimensions and is relevant, for example, to apprentices, fitters, mechanics and construction workers.
