Q: What motivated you to pursue a career in Industrial and Organizational Psychology? Can you share some key experiences or courses from your educational journey that shaped your interest in I/O?

A: When I initially pursued Psychology in college, I had no idea about Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology. It wasn't until I enrolled in an honors seminar at LSU, where we explored various sub-disciplines, that I discovered this fascinating field. With a keen interest in business and a recent experience studying abroad, I became captivated by the cultural influences on behavior. Recognizing the potential to merge these interests within large global organizations, I knew that I/O Psychology was the perfect path for me.

Q: What are some common challenges faced by I/O psychologists today, and how do you approach overcoming them?

A: A prevalent challenge in the field is bridging the gap between research and practical application in organizational settings. While topics like coaching, leadership, and employee engagement have gained popularity, there's a risk of dilution as individuals lacking proper credentials and experience enter the space. To address this, it's essential to differentiate ourselves and demonstrate the tangible value that trained I/O Psychologists bring to organizations.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Industrial and Organizational Psychology? Are there specific skills or qualities you believe are essential for success in this field?

A: For aspiring I/O Psychologists, I emphasize the importance of strong foundations in both psychology and business realms. Understanding business dynamics alongside psychological principles is crucial for navigating the complexities of organizational settings. Additionally, staying abreast of technological advancements is vital, as it impacts our field just as it does others. Ultimately, never lose sight of the core tenets of psychology, as they define our unique contributions in this interdisciplinary field.
